Keeping Cool in a Heatwave as a Key Worker

When the UK faces a heatwave, life can quickly become uncomfortable – especially for key workers who can’t escape to air-conditioned offices. Whether you’re on the frontline, in the community, or supporting vital services, Here’s how to manage the heat for you and your family.

Tips for Keeping Cool at Home

Make your home a cool haven, keep blinds or curtains closed during the day to block out direct sunlight. Open windows in the evening or early morning to let in cooler air, creating a cross-breeze if possible. If that is still not doing the trick, it might be time to buy a cooling fan. There are many options available, consider power, noise and portability to find the best option for your home. We love the ProBreeze OmniAir 41" Premium Bladeless Tower Fan and Air Purifier and their reviewers love it too, commenting on the premium feel, value for money, HEPA air filter, flexible controls, quiet performance and large vents that cool a room quickly. The SHARK FlexBreeze Pro Mist FA300UK Portable 11.8" Hybrid Pedestal Fan & Misting System is another good option that is on offer at Currys this week at £219.99 (£30 Off)

Muggy nights are one of the worst things about a British heat wave, swap heavy bedding for light cotton sheets and cool yourself down with a shower or by applying a cool wet cloth to your pulse points before you go to bed (or throughout the day if the heat is getting to you).

Tips for Keeping Cool at Work

For many key workers, PPE or physical activity can make heat even more intense. The most important thing to do is stay hydrated by sipping water regularly throughout the day instead of waiting until you’re thirsty. We love the Healter 2 in 1 insulated mist and drink bottle that keeps your drink cool and sprays a cool mist when you are feeling the heat. Where uniform rules allow, opt for light, loose, breathable clothing or surgical scrubs. Take lunch and breaks in shaded or well-ventilated areas and opt for a light lunch - salad, sushi or selection of fruits and vegetables. Don’t skip meals, eating helps your body retain salts and minerals that you lose through sweat.

Tips for Keeping Kids Cool in Hot Weather

Children heat up faster than adults, so keep an eye out for signs of overheating. Offer regular drinks, even if they don’t ask. Dress them in loose, light-coloured clothing that reflects heat and schedule outdoor play for early morning or late afternoon. If you have to be outdoors, avoid the peak sun hours of 11 am–3 pm where possible, if not, set up a shady spot in the garden with a parasol or pop up gazebo.

Get them to wear a hat and apply sunscreen frequently – sunburn reduces your body’s ability to cool itself. Keep a portable fan or misting spray nearby for instant relief. Cool baths, damp flannels, splashing in a paddling pool or sprinkler or frozen snacks can be a fun way to bring their temperature down.

Slice up a watermelon, stick lolly sticks in and freeze for a healthy and super refreshing frozen treat for the whole family.

Tips for Keeping Pets Cool in Hot Weather

Pets can’t tell us when they’re too hot, so prevention is vital. Never leave them in cars, even for a short time. Provide constant access to fresh water and shady rest spots. Walk dogs early in the morning or late evening when pavements are cooler. Cooling vests or bandanas can be an effective way to cool off a hot pup or freeze your dog’s wet food in a lick mat and watch their delight as they lick it like an ice lolly.

With a little effort, staying cool on the hot days can be manageable.– look after yourself, your family, and your furry friends,
